Happy one-month anniversary of when the Mets started playing games that didn’t count, don’t count and won’t count until April 3. Spring Training schedules don’t traditionally engender milestones while in progress, but this year, with the World Baseball Classic motivating early birds everywhere, what we call “spring” began in earnest amid the indisputable dead of winter. First Data’s been culled and collected dating back to halftime at the Super Bowl, or so it seems. As ever, we couldn’t wait for Spring Training to arrive, and as ever, we are antsy for it to go away. In a little over a week, hallelujah, it will.
WESTPORT—As Staples coach Jack McFarland put it, an 11-11 season and a first round Class LL win is a very good season for many baseball programs.
But not the Wreckers.
The season — which included not qualifying for the FCIAC playoffs for the first time in nine years — left a sour taste in the mouth for Staples, which hopes 2017 resembles 2015, and not 2016.
As the weather warms up and the jam-packed spring season starts, the Staples Wreckers varsity baseball team hopes to bounce back from its moderate season last year. After finishing last season at an even 10-10 record, the team hopes to utilize the underclassmen and dynamic senior leadership this year to improve the team. This year’s team, with numerous seniors going to college for baseball, has high hopes for the season.
