Varsity Head Coach Jack McFarland

Coach McFarland has led the Wreckers to the FCIAC Championship game in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011.  The Wreckers won the FCIAC Championship in 2008 and 2009, winning back-to-back Championships for the first time in school history, and won the Title again in 2011 to make it 3 FCIAC Championships in 4 years for the Wreckers.  In 2009, Coach McFarland was named FCIAC Baseball Coach of the Year, and in 2011 Coach McFarland received the Coaching Award from the Westport Sportsmen.  The 2013 season saw the Wreckers qualify for a school record 6th straight FCIAC tourney slot and went to to the Quarterfinals of the LL State Tournament.Since his arrival in 2005 the program has  had numerous players earn All-League, All-Area and All-State recognition ,also a major initiative was accomplished in 2009 with the renovation of the Staples Baseball Field which included new dugouts,new infield, underground drainage system,and an outdoor batting  cage. Coach McFarland has also been an assistant coach for the Staples Football program since 1995; in 2004 he was named the CHSCA Assistant Coach of the Year. He is currently an Assistant Dean at Staples. Jack resides in Monroe with his wife Norma; they have 4 daughters-17 year old twins Kelly and Kenzie, 12 year old Megan and Abby who just turned 8.

Varsity Assistant Coach Bob Smoler

Coach Smoler is in his 10th year coaching the Staples Varsity baseball team, working with the pitchers and catchers. Coach Smoler played catcher at both Scarsdale High School in New York and at Colgate University. Since 1993 he has coached various baseball teams in Westport involving children ages 9-18 years of age. He also runs all the town baseball programs in Westport for children age 13 and over. Coach Smoler is a certified Math teacher at Fairfield-Warde High School.


Varsity Pitching Coach P.J. Washenko

Former Amity High School captain, All-State and Senior All-Star standout P.J. Washenko (Amity ’99 – UMass-Amherst ’03) enters his 5th season as pitching coach. Coach Washenko played college baseball at the University of Massachusetts and coached at Amity High School for one season. He has been a guidance counselor at Staples High School for three years and resides in Trumbull, CT.

 


Varsity Assistant Coach Keith Avery

Coach Avery enters his eighth season coaching high school baseball,and his 4th at Staples High School.  For the past five years he has been an Assistant Varsity Coach for Saint Joseph High School. He has also coached various teams for the Trumbull Legion baseball program for the past six years.  He was recognized as the 2007 Junior Legion Coach of the Year after winning a state championship and regional runner-up.  Coach Avery also coached football at Saint Joseph High School for four years as an Assistant Varsity Coach. He played as a starter for three years in the outfield for the Quinnipiac University baseball team where he was the captain in 2003. He teaches Physical Education and Health at Stratford High School and resides in Milford, CT with his wife Danielle.


Junior Varsity Head Coach Jeff Love

Coach Jeff Love was an All Housatonic selection at Amity Regional High School, he enrolled at St.Johns and was a member of the 1993 Big East Championship team.  Coach Love was a 2nd team Big East selection and also All Northeast Region 1stteam pick. Jeff also played professionally for three years in the St.Louis and Houston organizations, and also four years in the Atlantic League. This will be Coach Loves first year with the Staples program.  Jeff currently works for Riddell and resides in Southport with his wife Ronni and his 3 boys Jonathan,Ryan and Jack.

Junior Varsity Coach Mike Caetano

Coach Caetano enters his 6th season the Wreckers baseball staff.  He has played baseball his entire life and was born an avid Yankee fan. He graduated from Amity High School and Southern Connecticut State University. He teaches Physical Education and Health at Staples.Mike resides in Orange, CT.

 

 


Freshman Assistant Coach Peter Caligiure

Coach Caliguire is in his tenth season coaching at Staples. Pete is coaching the freshman team for the second time after coaching the JV team for three years and spending two years on the varsity staff. Caligiure is a 1972 graduate of Trumbull High School and a 1976 graduate of Quinnipiac University. He is also the Sophomore and JV football coach at Staples.

Head Athletic Trainer Gaetana “G” Deiso

“G” is certified with the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and is licensed through the state of Connecticut. She graduated from Springfield College in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and a minor in Nutrition. She begins her fifth year as Head Athletic Trainer at Staples. Prior to Staples, she worked for 5 years as Head Athletic Trainer at Greens Farms Academy and at Moore Center for Rehabilitation. She also worked with Fairfield University’s football and rugby teams from 1999 to 2002. In the summer of 2002, she worked at Boyle’s Strength and Conditioning in Boston, where she trained many professional athletes and Olympians. She lives in Shelton with her husband Doug.
